Adjusting a number, not keeping a tally

A number counter is for when the figure on screen is the work: remaining items, a score that can go down, a total you picked up mid-count, or a step size other than one. The tally counter is built around marking occurrences. This page is built around moving a number.

You can use positive and negative whole numbers, set a starting value, and count by 1, 5, 10, 25, 100, or any positive whole number. Very large values are allowed. The total stays in this browser; it is not a spreadsheet or a calculator with formulas.

When to use a number counter

  • Increasing a total as quantities are added
  • Decreasing a total as quantities are used or removed
  • Starting from a number you already have
  • Stepping by 5, 10, or another custom increment
  • Working with negative values
  • Keeping a very large whole-number total readable

How to change the total

  1. Enter a starting number and press Set, or leave it at zero.
  2. Choose Count by if each press should move more than 1.
  3. Use + to increase and − to decrease.
  4. Undo reverses the last change. Reset returns to the starting number.

Frequently asked questions

Can the number be negative?

Yes. Decrease below zero, or Set a negative starting number.

How large can the number be?

Whole numbers can be far larger than ordinary calculator displays. Enter them as digits; commas in the starting field are ignored.

Can I count down as well as up?

Yes. Minus subtracts the current increment, so remaining quantities can fall as you work.
