What this tally counter is for

A tally is a record of how many times something happens. You add one when someone walks in, when a box is checked, or when a repetition finishes. You are not managing an abstract figure so much as keeping score of occurrences.

Paper tallies use groups of five marks. A handheld tally clicker does the same job with a button. This page is that same habit on a phone or computer: press plus for each occurrence. It does not scan barcodes, count coins, or store records on a server. The tally stays in this browser.

When to keep a tally

  • People entering a room, shop, or doorway
  • Attendance at a class, meeting, or shift
  • Inventory on shelves, in boxes, or during a stock check
  • Exercise repetitions, laps, or intervals
  • Events you would otherwise mark on paper
  • Simple record keeping when a clipboard is in the way

If you mainly need to raise or lower a number by custom amounts, including negatives or a very large total, the number counter is a better fit. If the thing you are counting is the click or tap itself, use the click counter.

How to keep the tally

  1. Press + once per person, item, or event.
  2. Press − or Undo if you marked one too many.
  3. Set a starting number when you already have a partial tally.
  4. Use Reset when a new count begins.

Count-by is there if you tally in groups (for example five at a time). Most tallies still work best one occurrence at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as tally marks on paper?

It serves the same purpose. You still record each occurrence as it happens. The difference is a number on screen instead of groups of five strokes.

Can I tally on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in a mobile browser and tap plus for each mark. Nothing is installed, and the tally stays on this device.

Does the tally save if I refresh?

Yes, in this browser only. It is not uploaded or shared with other devices.
